Previewing Iowa Ahead of Sunday Afternoon’s Matchup

Way back on Tuesday, as you’re probably painfully aware, fifth-ranked Michigan handed the Gophers men’s basketball team a brutal buzzer-beating loss.

After having more than enough time to digest that defeat, Richard Pitino & Co. are finally about to make their return to the hardwood.

Their Sunday afternoon opponent, the Iowa Hawkeyes, travel to the Land of 10K Lakes owners of an impressive 16-4 overall record, as well as the 19th overall national ranking.

When it comes to their current success, the Fran McCaffery coached squad has been relying heavily on their frontcourt combination of Tyler Cook and Luka Garza.

Cook’s 16.6 points per game average leads Iowa, while the 14.2 points Garza is posting per outing¬†holds onto the Hawkeyes’ second-place scoring spot.

In regards to how the duo goes about getting their buckets, the extremely athletic and aggressive Tyler Cook does almost all of his work in the paint.

Luka Garza gets plenty of points in the lane himself, but is also prone to knock down an outside shot or two.

Obviously, how Minnesota’s impressive big men of their own fair against Iowa’s bruisers will go a long way in determining the outcome of this one.

Although it’s evident that Cook is their best player, I feel that Iowa’s most exciting nerve-wracking athlete comes in the form of freshman Joe Wieskamp.

Simply put, the 6’6″ forward (11.6 ppg) is a snipe.

Last Sunday, during the Hawkeyes’ win over Illinois, Wieskamp nailed all six of his three-point attempts.

In addition to that particular day’s shooting clinic, the Muscatine, IA native and his 43.8 FG% from deep have been instrumental throughout our Big Ten foe’s early season success.

The rest of the Hawkeyes’ starting lineup, that is rounded out by veteran guards Jordan Bohannon (10.8 ppg) and Isaiah Moss (9.6 ppg).

To conclude with how the Gophers should fair against Iowa’s entire roster, it should be encouraging to know that the fine folks in Vegas are picking Minnesota!

Although it may only be by one point, they’re still picking them.
